Sergio Canales to be Raul’s replacement for next season?

Awaiting his homecoming

First some good news, Real Madrid have told Racing Santander they will be keeping Sergio Canales at the Bernabeu next season, dashing the Cantabrians’ hopes of taking their former player back on loan.

Canales was originally expected to spend at least another year on loan there. However, Racing president Francisco Pernia says he has always been resigned to the player moving to Madrid for the coming season. And at the launch of a campaign for season ticket holders on Tuesday he said:

In the written terms of the agreement between the three parties it says they wanted him for next season – we knew it was going to be like that.

Canales, meanwhile, is looking forward to starting life at the Bernabeu and linking up with new coach Jose Mourinho. The 19-year-old believes playing alongside our star players will help him settle in. He told Marca:

I will have to work hard and I know it will be difficult to get in the team, but I am excited and I can’t wait to get started. Mourinho has won everything and he will be great for Madrid. I don’t normally have difficulties adapting. I’m on open-minded person and I’m sure having so many great players alongside me will make things easier.

And now some bad news, well not really. Christoph Metzelder has come out and said that he wants Raul to join him at Schalke, and believes the striker would be a superb signing. I say so because it really doesn’t matter what Metzelder thinks. Until its Raul who is doing the talking I am not ready to believe this story.

Metzelder left Real earlier this summer after failing to make an impression in La Liga. Raul, at one time the club’s talisman, has also fallen out of favour and started just eight league games last term, scoring five goals. And now Metzelder wants to be reunited with a player once thought of as the most deadly finisher in Europe. Metzelder told Bild:

I understand him, I used to sit next to him on the Madrid team bus. Raul has the ambition to continue playing in the Champions League and is thinking seriously about Schalke. He has even been told which teams his sons will play in. He is in top shape. He was injured only once in my three years at Madrid. He has a great personality and his presence would be a huge boost for this young team.

Meanwhile, Real have been told by Bayern Munich to forget about signing Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. Bayern sporting director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in quotes published by Sportinformationsdienst that:

Whoever is thinking of Schweinsteiger, (Philipp) Lahm or (Thomas) Muller can forget about calling us. We already said after the final of the Champions League that we weren’t going to let anybody leave, and we have shown that with (Franck) Ribery.

This comes following rumors that linked us with a bid for several of the German stars. I should have known that it was false especially after it came just ahead of Spain’s clash tonight against Germany.

Someone who would be arriving is Angel Di Maria. The Argentine is expected to be presented to the World as a Madridista this Wednesday or Thursday. Finally some Real Madrid action!

Raul Gonzalez Blanco might just leave Real Madrid

Just as AS claimed a move to Schalke was imminent, Schalke boss Felix Magath confirmed today that the club is in talks with Raul. El Capitan with one year remaining on his contract at Real is said to be on the for a move away from the club this summer due to a lack of playing time. Several English clubs were after him during last season but Magath has now said he is hopeful of completing a deal and it appears as though the forward wants to delay any decision on his future for several weeks. Magath told Bild:

We are interested in him and are negotiating with his agent. The player has not decided yet and wants time, until the end of July, to make up his mind. It would be a huge signing for Schalke and the whole Bundesliga.

Christoph Metzelder, who left Real Madrid for Schalke on a free transfer this summer, is said to have encouraged Raul to make the move. Magath said:

We have Christoph’s friendship with Raul to thank for the chance of us signing such a player.

In other news, Cristiano Ronaldo now has a reason to smile, despite a disappointing World Cup after recently becoming a father. The Portuguese star announced on Sunday that he had exclusive custody of the baby boy, born in June to an anonymous American.

Osasooner rather than later – Osasuna pre-preview

Time to leave them sitting ducks

C.A. Osasuna a.k.a Los Rojillos are placed 12th in La Liga with 39 points, seven clear of the relegation zone and can confirm their status as a top-flight club with a win in tomorrow’s 19:00 CET kick-off against 2nd placed Real Madrid C.F at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

Osasuna with their über-cool 4-2-3-1 formation arrive in Madrid having scored the second fewest goals in La Liga  – a meager 30 from their 34 games. Real Madrid on the other hand have scored more than any other team in the league – a humongous 89 from the same number of games.

More stats, Real Madrid have won 37 and drawn 14 of the 63 matches played against Gorritxoak. And at home the Whites have won  24 out the  31 ti,mes they’ve played them. And in the current season Osasuna have only notched points in six of their 17 matches away from home.

But all that will not matter when eleven of our men take on ten of theirs and Walter Pandiani. All that will matter is the performance on the pitch. And that means we need to be at our best in order to have any kind of chance of winning the league. Barça play Villareal at El Madrigal in the late kick-off on Saturday and going by what happened midweek against Inter, when they were tactically played out by Mourinho’s men, they wouldn’t be in the best of mindsets thus giving us a very good chance of going ahead of them in the table. Either way, irrespective of whether they win or lose, we must get to the 98 point mark. Its unequivocally mandatory. Kaká could not have agreed more with me. Speaking to bwin.com he said:

This weekend’s match is very important. It’s another final for us. Osasuna are seven points clear of the relegation zone and have a lot at stake. They need to win as well, which is why I think it’s going to be a good match. A one-point difference is very little in a competition as challenging as La Liga. We will have a good chance of being champions if we win our last four matches.

And with reference to the Barcelona-Villareal game:

Barcelona visit a Villarreal team that is fighting for a spot in Europe. They are in a special section of the table and it will be a very difficult match. We know just how tough it will be. I don’t think Barça will have an easy time at all. There are four matches left and we must do our share.

Team news now and Osasuna first. With Javad Nekounam’s availability still in question, Puñal may get the nod as the defensive midfielder along with Ruper or Vadocz while Monreal will suit up for Jose Antonio Camacho’s team after serving a one-match suspension. The exact squad list will be posted in the proper preview to the game.

Their strategy is quite simple and well known to all. They attack using their quick wing-backs and wingers. Keeping tabs on them will stop the supply to the brawny Pandiani thus preventing them from scoring. Ricardo is in fine form and we must remember that we haven’t scored against them this season. They are the only other team apart from Bilbao and Barcelona in Spain to have achieved that.

Probable Starting XI: CA Osasuna

As far as we are concerned we will definitely be without the services of Raúl, Pepe, Van der Vaart and Drenthe. The latter though participated in full training today but will definitely not make the cut. The other three are missing for obvious reasons. We also have a few niggled players in Diarra, Arbeloa (niggled left patellar tendon), Lass (lower back pain) and Guti (strained left hamstring) who completed specific recovery protocols in the gym. Saturday’s session, scheduled for 10:30 CET, behind closed doors will be when the final squad is decided.

I think Kaká, Benzema and Ronaldo will start. I am not fielding Guti, Arbeloa and Lass and am keeping Granero along with them on the bench again. But it isn’t me but Manuel Pellegrini who will make the final decision. So let us just wait and see.

Probable Starting XI: Real Madrid C.F

The game should be a walk in the park for us. More of a formality than a task. We are in the right spirit with a good win last weekend. We seem to have players in form. And more importantly this is a home game. I am sure we are up for it. If we play like we do every week we will come out victors. We just need to keep it simple.

In other news, as most of you must already be knowing, Russell Crowe visited the Valdebebas yesterday and managed to take quite a few snaps with our stars during his promotion of Robin Hood in Madrid. Also, Veterans of Real Madrid and AC Milan will be clashing once again this season, this time for a good cause. Click here to learn more about it.

Transfer news and I sincerely request all you young Real Madrid fans to not believe the rumors about Carlos Tevez or Wayne Rooney coming to Real Madrid. They are as fake as David Villa accepting a move to Barcelona. On the other hand, the rumor linking Mahamadou Diarra to Manchester United might just be true. Momo is getting no time to play here and might as well feel like plying his trade in some other country now that he is nearing the end of his career. With Metzelder already leaving, Raúl and Guti contemplating whether to honor their contracts or not and Diarra planning to move – Dudek might be the only real veteran in our squad. Casillas, Ramos, Xabi and Kaká all have experience but then again age wise at least these are the players with the real major experience. The latest news regarding Guti is the rumor about him playing in Dubai.

And as far as José Mourinho managing Real Madrid is concerned, you’ve got to admit that you are flattered by the prospective. He is a special man and with a special talent as a manager. But then again, it all comes down to what we want. Do we want to win irrespective of the way we play? Or do we want to win the Real Madrid way? If you don’t understand my point then take this for example. Chelsea was a good club playing some real good football that almost all football fans loved watching before Mourinho took over. The only thing that they did not do was win titles. And then came Mourinho. Fans all over the world started hating Chelsea complaining about their style of play and their tactics. But that wasn’t the only thing that changed. They started winning titles. Even though they missed out on the Champions League they did make it to the last four more than once. It all comes down to what we want. Going by the dry period and the investments from Florentino we must agree that we are in desperate need for silverware. But thinking again, we are Real Madrid and we have a brand. Is Pellegrini maintaining our brand name?

If yes, we have to give him time – at least one more season. He now knows where his team is lacking and what needs to be done to improve them. Who knows, we might just have our best season next year. Pellegrini’s team has only shown signs of improvement. Drastic improvements so to speak. The only thing that needs to be corrected from this season is playing in do-or-die situations. We don’t seem to have enough number of big match players. Not big name players but big match players. The ones who can step up to the next level when the situation calls for it. We do that and we might just be the next set of invincibles. Far fetched or just a possibility?

If no, then we fire him and silverware is still not guaranteed next season. Every manager needs his settling-in period – even the special one. Also, he will definitely tinker with the team composition as much as he wants to so that it fits his game plan. And that means more money spent. Then, his team needs time to adapt thus taking more time. It is only then that we will win titles under him.

Also, there is the major factor about the players wanting to play under him. He is a man who is known to have the magical power of controlling big egos. Pellegrini seems to be doing a good job as far as that is concerned and at the same time is keeping his players happy. Will Mourinho be able to do the same? Ask Balotelli.

Ultimately it all comes down to what we want. What do you want?

I want it sooner rather than later.

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Recap

The last time I made a post was before the Valencia game. It feels like a long time back though it has been only a couple of weeks or by speaking football two match-days during which we beat Valencia comprehensively and then beat Zaragoza not so convincingly, something that has been a part and parcel of this season. And during these past two weeks a lot has happened and I am sorry that I couldn’t keep you posted as and when the shit came in. Not that you care. But anyhoo, the fact is that I’m in my last few weeks of my days as a engineer-in-the-making and it has been sort of tight, you know, with my end-semester examinations and stuff.

So what has happened since the Valencia win? The clever way out would be to say a lot. Yes of course a lot has happened. Firstly, Raúl and Kaká returned to training and both were included in the Squad List that traveled to Zaragoza. Especially with all the news about Kaká faking it (no pun intended), it was essential for Manuel Pellegrini and the player himself to see some action after a 45-day hiatus. Raúl meanwhile, was out since the Barça game but recovered just in time to make the cut. But neither of them started the game. Pellegrini preferred to use the same line up that he used against both Almería and Valencia with Guti and Van der Vaart playing alongside Xabi and Gago – a move that left Esteban Granero fuming. Apparently, the young Spaniard who hasn’t started a game since the win over Atlético (?) only because of his poor form was spotted venting his anger over the manager’s decision to leave him out again only to be consoled and pacified by the veteran Malian Mahamadou Diarra. The Offside had the incident well covered and to get a better insight of the situation click here. One interesting point that Corey mentioned was the fact that both Diarra and Dudek are considered to be great motivators for the rest of the squad. It is not only the manager who has to motivate the players, its also the senior members of the squad. If you look at Van der Vaart’s and Kaká’s celebrations after their goals against Almería and Zaragoza you will understand what I am talking about. And as far as the Granero situation itself goes, I feel that he has all the rights to be frustrated but it is only a fact that he has only himself to blame. Real Madrid is not about fielding stars – but only about fielding the best players on form in the line up. If Granero is better than Xabi in training then it is Granero who will play. And I hope he does get back his place in the line up.

Next came the game at La Romareda. Real were dealt with a blow with just 15 minutes into the game. The ever physical Zaragoza got their first victim of their game when Rafael van der Vaart went out injured to be replaced by a somewhat half-fit Raúl. The first half ended scoreless but within five minutes of the second half we went ahead thanks to the super-sub. It is a fact that El Capitan, who was injured again during his cameo, was to be replaced by Benzema just before he scored but thankfully it came only after we went ahead.

The second blow to Zaragoza came when Contini was shown a red card for an alleged elbow on Pipita. Real were ahead both on goals and on head count and when we thought we’ve sealed the game they drew level through Colunga who latched on to a through ball from Aguilar which dissected our defense to beat Casillas scoring into an empty net. It was a vital blow both to the game and to the little chance that we have of lifting the title. And we needed a miracle to win as Zaragoza decided to play 9 men in defense with only Colunga lurking forward.

And was Jesus’ own son who came down to save us. Kaká who hadn’t played a single game for 45 days and has just gotten back to full training was brought on by Pellegrini in the 78th minute. His first touch of the ball was a super shot on Roberto’s goal which was saved. And within 5 minutes of that shot, Cristiano spotted the Brazilian inside their box and supplied him with a good pass that he finished in a Kaká-esque fashion.

Real Zaragoza 1-2 Real Madrid. One point behind Barcelona.

A clinical examination and MRI later revealed that the captain has a Grade II sydnemosis ankle sprain that will keep him sidelined for at least four weeks basically ruling him out for the season while a similar examination and MRI on the left thigh of Rafael van der Vaart revealed that the player has Grade I-II tear on his left femoral biceps that will keep him sidelined for at least three weeks. It was also feared that Rafa might miss the World Cup but later it was revealed that he would recover sooner than expected.

On the other hand, rumors were all around that the captain has played his last game for Real as his season came to an premature end. Marca later reported that it is in the Captain’s hands to decide whether to stay or not. It is a similar situation with Guti as he too revealed that this season would most probably be his last with Real. But rumors have it that Guti will continue for one more season. Only time can answer these questions.

Someone else who is bound to leave next season is Metzelder who revealed sometime back that he will see out his contract here and would probably look at a career back home in Germany. Sttutgart, Wolfsburg and Schalke are potential suitors with the latter being the latest team on pursuit of the veteran defender. And that leaves only Dudek and Diarra as the two remaining veterans on the side.

Other rumors linking players out of the club are Bayern Munich’s interest in Arbeloa, and Arsenal’s interest in Lass. Both seem too far fetched to me as both have vital roles to play in the side. Thereby I am rubbishing all rumors that say that Lass is unhappy at Real. It is only fair to Gago that Lass sits out his time. Gago did it in the first half of the season and now its the Frenchman’s turn.

And as far as players coming in are concerned, we’re pursuing every big star in the World. Latest are Ronaldo’s recommendation in Patrice Evra, Ashley Cole, David Silva, Franck Ribery blah blah blah…

And that brings the end of this post. It was good to go through the past two weeks for they have been good – you know – especially with Barcelona getting kicked in Milan and stuff. Let us hope that things only get better in the future.

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

MRIs Galore – Almeria pre-preview

UNLEASH THE KRAZEN!

The worst hangover a Madridista can have is the post-(title-hopes-deciding-Clásico-loss) one. And what makes you feel even worse is to see a host of players on the injured list just when you think that the whole team is finally recovering from injuries and suspensions. This week is one such and I am still recovering from the hangover. And before I could recover we seem to have yet another game to play, this time against Almería at the Estadio del Mediterráneo.

The week started in a lousy fashion as usual. Sunday was given off to the players and they returned to training on Monday when the news came out that an MRI performed on Raúl González at Sanitas La Moraleja revealed that the player has post-traumatic inflammation of his right meniscus; an injury that is expected to keep him sidelined between two and three weeks. El Siete along with Rafael van der Vaart, Kaká and Pepe worked out in the gym while the sole consolation was that Royston Drenthe seemed to have recovered from his injury. The wing-back was seen jogging at a normal pace along with his team mates.

The same day Valdano went on air with Cadena Ser and reassured us fans that the team is committed to winning the last seven games. He emphasised the fact that should that happen the 98 points we finish with will be historic. But what he didn’t mention would be the fact that if Barça too go undefeated they will end up with 101. But that isn’t how a Madridista thinks is it?

He then spoke about his hopes about our €56 million summer signing Ricardo Kaká coming back and making a big impact in the remaining seven games of which he might play only four or five probably.

Once Kaka returns we hope he can provide some answers… big answers. He has improved quite a bit. Let’s see if he is able to help us down the final stretch.

What he then said was the best part of the whole interview. While Marca had gone on and on about replacing him at the helm, Valdano simply killed all the nonsense talk, saying:

We are not looking for a new coach. Despite last weekend’s disappointment he always stays calm and has the strength to continue. Every Monday is the same for him whether the team wins or loses. He always confronts each week with peace of mind, which is quite a blessing when coaching a team like Real Madrid.

And that restored some peace in my head. It didn’t hurt as much as it did earlier in the day.

Then came Tuesday and yet another MRI was performed. This time it was on Christoph Metzelder after he abandoned Tuesday’s training sesssion. It was confirmed that the player is suffering from acute tendinitis in his right patelar tendon ergo is expected to miss two to three, during which he will undergo medical treatment and physiotherapy. Rafael van der Vaart returned to train with the rest of the group as did fellow Dutchman Royston Drenthe whereas Kaká and Raúl continued to train indoors. While Van der Vaart was expected to make the cut for tonight’s game the other three weren’t.

Wednesday was the usual closed door session and the focus had officially shifted to Almería. Juanma Lillo took over from Hugo Sanchez in Week 16 and the team now sits in the middle of the league table. With 37 points, Almería are nine clear of the danger zone with seven matches left to play. This year they have lost only two times at home, where they earned an important victory against Atlético Madrid and drew against Barcelona.

Though we won 4-2 in the home game against them since changing their name to UD Almeria they have not lost at home to Real Madrid. One victory and one draw against the Whites in the last two years show how tough the ground really has been for us. Almeria though are without a win in their last three league matches making predicting this game’s outcome a bitch.

Almeria tend to rely on a 4-2-3-1 game plan in order to capitalize on their fast attacking midfielders and players who can make things happen when in possession of the ball. They may not be the biggest men on the pitch, but they play technically sound football and present a danger on the counterattack. Corona, Crusat and Piatti bring order and speed to the midfield and can reach the opponent’s box when needed. Uche is the team’s top scorer with seven goals to his name this season. On the defensive front, goalkeeper Diego Alves rises to the occasion week after week and makes his back line feel very secure of itself.

Lillo has a full-strength squad to choose from aside from the injured Chico.

Real Madrid are coming out of their first loss at home this season. Los Merengues lost 2-0 to Barcelona in what might turn out to be the turning point in this season’s title race. It was the first time this season that we dropped points at home and the tide now favors Barcelona as far as La Liga is concerned. Sergio Ramos pointed out perfectly in his preview for the game in bwin.com that it would be a mistake to dwell on our last match because the league is still in play. Mathematically we are still in it and the last seven games will show us the real difference between the likes of Juande Ramos, Schuster etc. and Manuel Pellegrini. Last season we lost several consecutive games on the trot after the loss to Barcelona in the Clásico even though we were still in the race. This time we are in a similar situation and are now six points behind with a game in hand. The title race in England, Germany, Italy and France have shown us that anything is possible in football and we must be ready to take it when they come by. Ramos concurs:

We need to capitalize on the opportunities we are given. Almeria haven’t spent many years in Primera Division, but they always show up to play and we have a lot of respect for them. They aren’t by any means a pushover, but we have our weapons and hope to earn the win.

And that is what we must do. Respect but demolish Almería.

Manuel Pellegrini announced the names of the 18 men who will travel to Almeria later this evening for tomorrow’s match. Real Madrid Castilla’s Mateos and Juanfran made the final cut, while Garay was left out due to suspension and Raul, Metzelder, Kaka, Drenthe and Pepe remain unavailable due to injury.

REAL MADRID SQUAD LIST

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek.
Defenders: Arbeloa, Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Mateos.
Midfielders: Xabi Alonso, Gago, Lass, Diarra, Guti, Van der Vaart, Granero.

Probable Starting XI: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Gago, Xabi Alonso, Granero, Van der Vaart, Higuaín, Ronaldo.

Prediction: Almería 1-3 Real Madrid

Post-match comments

Manuel Pellegrini appeared very pleased following his team’s hard-earned victory that gives them the top spot in the table heading into next Saturday’s showdown against Barcelona. Casillas, Albiol and Metzelder dicussed the keys to beating Racing and the forthcoming Clasico shortly after tonight’s win. Real Madrid Castilla’s Marcos Alonso made his first team debut on Sunday by replacing Higuain in the late stages of the match.

Pellegrini:

We need to do what we do on a daily basis in order to win next Saturday. We cannot lose our identity. We will seek the victory and whoever makes the fewest mistakes will win.

Both of us won our matches this weekend. We are up against a great opponent, but I am sure we will win if we focus and stick to our football.

The Clasico is just another match that has to be played and it is followed by more matches. We cannot make any mistakes from here on out because we won’t be facing any easy teams.

Casillas:

Our defense was outstanding and we managed to keep a clean sheet. We did a good job. Saturday’s Clasico is just another match on the calendar. It will be fun. I am shocked about how many points we both have. It’s quite unusual.

Albiol:

We knew this would be a tough match. Racing had a lot at stake, but we knew how important it was to win and keep pace with Barcelona. Racing got few chances on goal, but we can never let our guard down with a 0-1 advantage. Once we scored the second we were able to take our foot off the gas a little.

Metzelder:

We had to win no matter what. The fact that we didn’t concede any goals and that we are leaders again is good news. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are winning all their matches, so I am sure next week’s game will be crucial. However, there are still other difficult matches to be played, meaning that Saturday’s will not decide who wins La Liga.

Marcos Alonso:

All you think about when sitting on the bench is playing. If the score is in your favor, you think it may just be your day. Today I sensed it, which is why it is the happiest day of my life.

My grandfather [Marquitos] only ever speaks about Real Madrid. My who family was here and they are thrilled, but I am even more so.

I will continue working my hardest to be here every Sunday. It’s not easy to make room for yourself in a club like Real Madrid. Castilla players are there waiting for the call, so joining the first team is the greatest thing that can happen.

Casillas:
“Our defense was outstanding and we managed to keep a clean sheet. We did a good job.”

“Saturday’s Clasico is just another match on the calendar. It will be fun. I am shocked about how many points we both have. It’s quite unusual.”

Albiol:
“We knew this would be a tough match. Racing had a lot at stake, but we knew how important it was to win and keep pace with Barcelona. Racing got few chances on goal, but we can never let our guard down with a 0-1 advantage. Once we scored the second we were able to take our foot off the gas a little.”

Metzelder:
“We had to win no matter what. The fact that we didn’t concede any goals and that we are leaders again is good news. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are winning all their matches, so I am sure next week’s game will be crucial. However, there are still other difficult matches to be played, meaning that Saturday’s will not decide who wins La Liga.”

Wednesday round-up

Fernando Gago and Christoph Metzelder are both Madridistas. Both have spent almost the same amount of time in Madrid with the Argentine being here half a season longer than the German. Gago came to Real as an under-developed but temperamental youngster whereas the German came in at the peak of his club and country career knowing the opportunities that he would have at Real would be limited. Gago cost us cash and Metzelder came in for free. And both were brought in during the Calderon reign. OK. Now whats your fuckin’ point, you might ask? You should. My answer is simple. I just thought before I went on about the news these two were making I should introduce the two of them to you. They haven’t been playing all that regularly and any new Madridista lured in by the signings of Ronaldo-Kaka-Benzema might not know them at all. Anyhoo, let me get to the point.

First, Metzelder. Christoph Metzelder believes that joining Real Madrid was a huge mistake as he feels that he has wasted three seasons of his career. The 29-year-old defender came to Real from Borussia Dortmund and was revered as one of the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga. But the move quickly was not as successful as people thought it would be. He has made only 22 appearances for Real which lost him his place in the German national team. Metzelder now admits he is counting the days until his contract runs out in the summer. He told Kicker:

I do not think that the club will extend my contract. But even if things suddenly changed then I would look to end my adventure at Real Madrid. I dreamed of playing alongside such players, but in all honesty, they have been three lost years.

Metzelder press conference

Christoph Metzelder promised hard work and sacrifice throughout the remainder of the season during today’s press conference.

How do you feel?
I feel good. I have been injury-free for many days and I think I am fit to play in any upcoming matches.

How have you handled all the speculation of center-backs who are being linked with Real Madrid?
This is the pro sports worl and there are always injuries, so it is logical that Real Madrid thinks about signing someone after the injury sustained by Pepe. It does not affect me. I will continue being the professional I always have been and I will work hard until the very end. Anything else is a club matter.

Barcelona players had more holiday time. Do you think it’s a matter of arrogance?
I don’t want to discuss Barcelona. We returned to begin preparing for our next match. Barcelona perhaps played more matches than us, which is why they had more time off. We need to focus on ourselves to ensure that we are ready for Osasuna.

How is Guti?
He always has a smile on his face and cheers the team up. I cannot comment on his injury, but I think he will be fit for action soon.

Are these next five months the most important of your career with your contract with Real Madrid coming to an end and the World Cup just around the corner?
It is an important time. I haven’t spoken to the German national team coach, so I don’t think he is counting on me. Regarding my contract, we will discuss it over the summer.

Do you think certain players have had targets put on their backs since the Alcorcon match?
I don’t think today is the appropriate time to discuss that because I must defend this team until the end.

Are you frustrated that you aren’t playing much?
The last two and a half years have been tough, but I am not going to discuss it. The coach makes the decisions and I have to live with them. I am a professional and I will work hard until the end of the season. We will see if I play again or not.

Real Madrid to Pepe

Shortly after hearing the official diagnosis, Pepe received a swarm of “Get well” wishes from his teammates.

Raul:

Pepe, keep your chin up. You have all our support and we wish you a speedy recovery.

Casillas:

Pepe, we love you very much. All are thoughts are with you. You are a great player and person. This team will fight for you. Get well soon.

Guti:

You have our full support so that you get well as quickly as possible. You need to return soon. We miss you, Pepe.

Ramos:

We are here for you, brother. The greats always come back, and you are one of them. We hope to see you soon. Strength and patience.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Stay strong, Pepe. Come back soon. We love you a lot.

Kaka:

I am sure you will return soon because you are strong and because we your teammates are going to help you.

Xabi Alonso:

Pepe is very important to this team as both a person and player, which is why we hope he returns as soon as possible. We are here for anything he needs.

Madridistas in WC2010 press conference

Shortly after the 2010 World Cup final draw concluded and Real Madrid’s internationals learned who they would be competing against next summer in South Africa, Casillas (Spain), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Kaka (Brazil), Benzema (France), Higuain (Argentina), Metzelder (Germany) and Van der Vaart (Netherlands) held a joint press conference at the Santiago Bernabeu to discuss their thoughts on the draw results and the competition.

IKER CASILLAS

What can you say about the draw?
We were lucky when you look at all the teams, but we have to respect every opponent. We cannot think we have the nine points in hand. We must play against great teams if we want to reach the final. The knockout rounds are the most difficult. There is a long time to go. It will be discussed a lot until then, but we will do as well as Spain is supposed to.

Your thoughts on Spain’s group?
I think Chile is the most complex. We played against them last year. They defended well. I know Bravo, who plays for Real Sociedad. They did well in qualifying. We are less familiar with Honduras and Switzerland. Spain must make it to the next round.

You may face Brazil or Portugal in the Last 16.
We have to play against the best teams in order for Spain to do well. We cannot reach the final against teams that aren’t favorites. There are some teams who always do well in the World Cup. We need to play like we have been and get to South Africa in the best shape possible. We will have to play our hearts out if we face Brazil or Portugal. It would be a real pleasure to cross paths with them.

How would you describe the Spanish national team?
It is a time for hope and excitement.

Several of your teammates play for teams who have won the World Cup.
Brazil, Argentina, Germany and France have already won it. We want to be there too. I envy Kaka because he is already a world champions. And Metzelder too because he played in a final. We will try to earn our first star on top of our crest.

Is the fact that no European team has ever won a World Cup outside of Europe a handicap?
It’s a coincidence.

Who will be the best player in the World Cup?
I hope it’s the entire Spanish national team. No player stood out in the Euro, but every one of us played a role.

Has the team forgotten about losing to the United States in the Confederations Cup?
We found ourselves in a unique circumstance. They scored on their two chances. They had luck on their side that day. We lost one match in ten. That’s it. They defended well and reached the final.

Metzelder to Realmadrid.com

Christoph Metzelder, who today celebrates his 29th birthday, sat down with Realmadrid.com to comment on his special day and the team’s upcoming schedule of matches.

Christoph Metzelder (23)

How do you feel on you birthday?

Good. I am healthy and training. My family is coming in today so I am very happy.

How are you going to celebrate?

I’m just going to relax with my mom, my brothers and my friends. I cannot wait to have my mom’s traditional German apple tart. I love Spanish food, but I also miss my mom’s cooking.

Was the point earned at San Siro a good early birthday present?

Yes. It was an important point that allowed us to hold on to the top spot and take a big step towards the Last 16.

Another good present would be a derby victory.

We have won the last four matches against Atleti and hope to extend the streak. It will be tough because teams with new coaches are usually very motivated, but let’s hope that isn’t the case on Saturday. I would love to play in the Vicente Calderon because it’s a stadium I have yet to add to my list.

And the best would be a turnaround against Alcorcon on Tuesday.

We played poorly in the first leg and want to turn it around in the Bernabeu. A lot depends on the first few minutes and whether or not we score an early goal.

Fans will be out in full force. In four hours on Wednesday 15,000 tickets were sold.

Madridistas always support us. We all want to turn this tie around, and anything is possible in the Santiago Bernabeu.

Letters and Ankles

The Letter:

Cristiano Ronaldo sent a message to his team-mates before the crucial match against Malta.

I wished with all my heart to fight for Portugal with you all, but as you know an untimely injury prevents me from doing so.

Your great challenge for this evening is to play a great game to take us to the South Africa World Cup; mine is to recover as soon as possible to help my team, Real Madrid, and our national team to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. I have to fight to recover because I believe that’s the best thing I can do to help the national team whenever it needs me. I want you to know that my heart will be with you in every minute of tonight’s game and that I will be proud of your efforts, just like everyone else in Portugal will be.

I wish you all the best.

The Ankles:

  • Jose Maria Gutierrez ‘Guti’ missed Tuesday’s session and had to work out in the gym because of a sprain on his left ankle.
  • Christoph Metzelder had to leave training early on Tuesday. He went to Santias-La Moraleja Hospital, where the Medical Staff determined he was injured with a sprain on his right ankle.

We don’t know how much football these two are going to miss though. But apparently Metz’s injury is a little serious and he too will miss the Milan matches.

It is important to note that Guti is left footed and Metzelder is right footed. Ripping Guti off his right foot and Metz off his left and making an android out of it would still be useless.

Another ankle that we’ve got to worry about is Cristiano Ronaldo’s.

Damn it! When was the last time I made the post without Cristiano Ronaldo on it?!

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Post-match comments

Director General and Presidential Aide Jorge Valdano expressed his satisfaction after the 3-0 victory over Espanyol.  Coach Manuel Pellegrini held a press conference after the 3-0 victory over Espanyol. Granero and Metzelder showed their satisfaction to the media after the victory against Espanyol. Kaka and Albiol talked to the press after the game against Espanyol.

Espanyol 0-3 Real Madrid (7)

Jorge Valdano:

Ronaldo might be anxious. He has scored two goals in two league games. He is very active on the offensive end and when spaces open up he is unstoppable.

It’s too early to say the tournament will be a head-to-head between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The second half in today’s game turned out well for us, but we had many problems during the first 25 minutes of the match. It took us a while to control the midfield, but the quality of our players is such that in the end it outweighs other aspects of the game, and if we manage to score the opener everything is easier. However, we’ll go through many tense games during the season in which we’ll have to fight for the victory till the final whistle blows.

Manuel Pellegrini:

It was a close game in the first half, even though we managed to score and Kameni made a good save before that. In the second half we had more scoring chances than them and netted two strikes. It was a well-deserved victory. I’m not sure the match outcome was too harsh for Espanyol because we deserved to win with more than one-goal difference. The condition the pitch was in made it difficult for us. Espanyol put a lot of pressure in the first half to overtake us and that effort affected them during the second half.

Every starter is aware he has to perform well. I have a lot of confidence in this squad. Today was Guti’s and Granero’s turn, but every member of the squad will have an important role.

Ronaldo is not under pressure. I think he is being over-examined. He is adapting to the league and the team. He has made three solid performances and has scored goals. He doesn’t have any problems. He looks calm.

Metzelder to La Sexta

Metzelder told La Sexta that he is very proud of being on this year’s Real Madrid squad.

Christoph Metzelder (19)

I think the fact that the Champions League final will be held at the Bernabeu will make this year special. That’s the title I personally prefer to win. I think Real Madrid’s project is extraordinary. Building a team with the best players in the world is something to be proud of.

My goal is to play as many games as possible and to help the team. I hope we are successful this season. It is very important to win the first games in La Liga and to have a good start in the Champions League on Tuesday. These are important games for us to grow confident. It is especially important to win against Espanyol.

This is a very impressive squad indeed. Teams like this normally have the chance to sign one player like Kaka or Cristiano Ronaldo, but it is practically impossible to bring both of them together. This is a great project.

Like most players, I didn’t know if I would remain on the team when last season ended. I tried to prepare myself as best as I could during the holidays and the preseason. I’ve played many minutes so far and I’m happy for being at Real Madrid and for being a part of this project.

I think Pellegrini is a special kind of coach. He likes to train hard and with intensity. He has a different way of talking to his players. It is nevertheless too soon to value the work he is doing.

This Club’s goal is to win it all, like always. I think the strength the squad and the coach have make us ready to succeed.

Metzelder to Fifa.com

Christoph Metzelder talked to Fifa.com about Real Madrid’s preseason and his role as a defender.

Real Madrid 4-2 LDU Quito (18)

You’re seen as a very modern type of central defender operating in what has become one of the most difficult roles in football. How intelligent do you have to be to become a world-class defender?
I think that first of all, we have to differentiate between intelligence and being a clever player. When the back-pass rule came into effect and the role of libero-type sweeper, hitherto very popular  in Germany, was often replaced by a flat defensive line, the game certainly changed a lot for defenders. You’re more responsible for building up play these days and the requirements of the position have become a lot tougher. Defenders now have be playmakers while the attackers are free to be more artistic.

Tell us, what’s it like being with stars like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, day in and day out?
[laughs] Ha, a lot of the hype comes from the media. When you get into the changing room, you’re all team-mates together and it’s a lot more down to earth. They’re both perfectly regular team-mates as far as I’m concerned. They are exceptional players and off the pitch they’re totally different in terms of personality – one of them is pretty quiet, the other a lot less so.

Could you summarise the legend surrounding Real Madrid in a few sentences…?
Real is a blend of the old and the new, and that’s what make the club special. The amazing tradition, coupled with a real ambition to go forward, be successful and win titles. When you think that in Spain there is the king, and then after him comes Real Madrid – that says a lot!

You were strong enough to handle the pressure of marshalling the German defence at two FIFA World Cups, but now you’re faced with a difference challenge; proving yourself on a daily basis in Real Madrid’s star-studded team. Is that pressure on another level?
It really is a great experience! Even in training – I’m pushed on a daily basis to achieve the kind of levels that other clubs only see at the weekend in the championship.

Is it not therefore more difficult for you to be stuck at home watching on TV when Germany are playing?
The way I see it, the only way I can prove myself at the moment is by playing well for Real Madrid. At the end of every day, I have to be satisfied as a sportsman that I have done my utmost to get back in the starting XI, and I think that I’m certainly doing that at the moment.

Post-match comments

Christoph Metzelder was very happy with the team’s victory in his emotional return to Dortmund. Esteban Granero was delighted with the final score in Germany and with his opening strike. Both Arjen Robben and Xabi Alonso were satisfied with the victory against Borussia.

Borussia Dortmund 0-5 Real Madrid (6)

Metzelder:

Borussia Dortmund have incredible supporters. It is one of the most important fan bases in Germany. It’s presence on the stands was very noticeable and it caused an impression on my team-mates. I experienced something unique for a player during the match. I had as much fun as in a European competition game. The last few hours I’ve spent in Germany have been very exciting.

Despite the 5-0 defeat the fans gave the team a very heartfelt applause. Tonight was a very special moment in my career. I began to play football in Dortmund and this is a very special club to me. This was my first team and those were my first supporters. I am always grateful for their affection.

We made changes in the lineup and in the system we used. It proves all of the players on the squad are impoprtant and that we can all do much for the team. The season will be very long and tough, so we must all do our best to help.

Granero:

It’s always nice to score a goal, especially when it’s the first in such a spectacular game. The goal was important because it opened up the match and gave us chances to score more strikes. This wasn’t an ordinary fixture. Borussia are a tough team that have already played two league games this season. Real Madrid proved they can make a stand. This victory is very impoprtant.

We are happy because we didn’t concede any goals. It all seems easier now. The team is ready. The season is around the corner and we notice an improvement in every match. There is much competition on the squad because it has many quality players. The coach is proving he treats us all as equals. We all try to showcase our game and to prove we deserve to be here. We all do much to help the team. The season will be very long and we’ll all have to do our best to help.

Metzelder to Realmadrid.com

The match against Borussia commemorating its centenary will no doubt be very special for Christoph Metzelder, who played for the German team before joining Real Madrid.

Christoph Metzelder (19)

It will be a special day for me. My family and friends will be at the stadium. It will be the first time I face Borussia Dortmund since I left. I know many people at the club: players, equipment managers… I am happy to return.

It will be a special match for me, but I will take it like any other. I will try to do a good job to help the team win the match. Personal and professional aspects of my life will come together. I will try to win the match and enjoy myself.

Borussia are an uncomfortable opponent. They run fast and pressurise all over the pitch. Many young kids will face the best team in the world and they will be extra motivated for that. It won’t be easy, but we must try to play our game and create chances on goal. We are good enough to win the match.

I remember both the 1998 Champions League semifinal and the 2003 match between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Portillo scored on the 94-minute mark of the latter.

I am happy with the preseason so far. I’ve tried to prepare as best as I could and I’ve trained hard with Pellegrini. I think the team is fit. We have improved considerably on a tactical level. I feel like I truly am a part of this team and I try to help my team-mates.

Metzelder press conference

Christoph Metzelder gave the first press conference following the team’s return from its successful North American tour.

Christoph Metzelder (16)

You haven’t been working out wiith your team-mates. How do you feel?
I have strained my adductor muscles and that’s why I did specific workouts today. It isn’t serious.

Juande Ramos didn’t count on you, but you are a starter with Pellegrini. Your life seems to have changed much in just two months…
I think it has. We all know it is still too soon, but we must use the preseason to prepare ourselves well for the long season ahead. I feel fine and I am happy with my current personal situation.

How are Van Nistelrooy and Diarra doing?
We are all happy about their return. We all want to play and I think it’s natural for them to feel excited after sustaining injuries for eight months.

Have you coincided with Cristiano in the gym today? How is he doing?
I’m no doctor, but he looked good. He isn’t sick with swine flu and he’s been able to train normally. I think he will very probably rejoin the squad this week.

What did you think of the North American tour?
It was a tough trip that helped us improve. We promoted football, so we are happy with the tour.

Is the team’s main objective to win the three titles this season?
This club must always win. We know it will be hard because there are many quality teams in Europe. I think we have improved considerably and our goal is always to win.

Are Pellegrini’s methods very different to Schuster’s or Juande’s?
Every coach has a particular style. He’s done a good job so far by having us attend double or triple sessions each day. The team is grateful for that. We are working very hard to be as fit as we possibly can at the start of the campaign.

Is it worth it to spend so much money on players like Cristiano Ronaldo?
Football has undergone a great change and become big business, especially when it comes down to players that make a difference. We footballers also have great social responsibility with our fans and people that haven’t been fortunate enough to earn what we earn.

Is this the best squad you’ve ever been a part of?
This squad has great quality. It isn’t normal to have men like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same team. We are proud of that.

Who will feel more pressure, Barcelona for having to win three titles again or Real Madrid for having made such great signings?
Both clubs have always felt great pressure. The situation hasn’t changed much. Team spirit, camaraderie and a good atmosphere rule over this squad.

Real Madrid 4-2 Liga Universitaria de Quito

Real Madrid needed a victory to reach the Peace Cups semifinals and they got one thanks to playing spectacular football in the second half and scoring through Cristiano Ronaldo, Esteban Granero, Christoph Metzelder and Alvaro Negredo. Juventus await the Whites in Seville.

Real Madrid 4-2 LDU Quito (1)

New faces on the starting lineup tonight were Salgado, Pepe, Marcelo, Guti, Robben and Higuain. The Whites’ intention from the start was to keep possession as much as possible. Robben had the first chance to score with a shot from outside the box on the 3-minute mark. Following a colossal counterattack by Higuain, Benzema was the next to put keeper Ceballos to the test with a shot tha grazed the crossbar (6′). Liga Quito also proved to be dangerous and kept Real Madrid alert at all times.

Marcelo dribbled past an opponent down the left, circled around another and shot slightly high off target. On the other hand, Pepe -who returned to the Bernabeu for the first time since his league suspension last season- did everything in his power to prevent the Ecuatorians from scoring. His performance was so brilliant that fans on the stands chanted his name. The last chance on goal of the first half came from Bieler, but Dudek saved the day with a phenomenal stretch (38′).

Cristiano Ronaldo met with some disapproval from the crowd at the end of the first half because of his shy performance, but he only needed one minute to unsettle Quito and win favour back in the second part. The Portugues star received the ball down the left and dribbled past two defenders with bicycle kicks, provoking a penalty as soon as he stepped inside the box. He stepped up for the challenge and scored his first goal at his new stadium.

Cristiano played a crucial role in his team’s second goal after a shot of his on target was cleared by keeper Dominguez -who came on in the second half- only to fall at Granero’s feet. The academy player sent it to the back of the net, therefore netting his first goal for the Whites. Liga Quito didn’t give up and cut distances short in a mess of a play on the goal-line (67′). Minutes later, Granero served the corner kick from which Metzelder netted a terrific header. Vera stepped up and again scored for the visiting side on the 85-minute mark, but Alvaro Negredo -who came on for Benzema close to the end of the second part- shattered their hopes for a comeback when he scored from a cross by Drenthe (90′).

Robben and Benzema unable to finish match

How fair is it to expect Real to win it all this season?

Morning all,

It has been a tremendous week for Real Madrid. Following Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raúl Albiol is the young French international Karim Benzema who will be at the Bernabéu for the next six-seasons. We have now spent over €200m and that just isn’t the end. Florentino says two more signings are on their way. One of them might just be Franck Ribery who has just done the maximum a player could possibly do to join Real Madrid. And the other hopefully should be a defender. At this point anyone could join Real Madrid. ANYONE. And that is what makes this club so special. At one point we were loaning in mediocre players like Julien Faubert just to give a shot at the title and now its players like Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema who are giving out an SOS for us to go and get ’em. But are these the players whom we really need to get, if not better, then at least to equal Barcelona’s feat last season? There can be no doubts when it comes to the quality and the temperament of each player we have bought. The likes of Kaka and Ronaldo have done it all. But my question at this juncture is whether their strengths will get added or be nullified in the course of playing time.

The Galacticos, the real ones, didn’t succeed too well when they were overloaded with stars. When that era began it was only Zidane, Figo, Raul and Roberto Carlos and it was then that we won the Ninth title. (Luiz) Ronaldo joined and was crowned the Pichichi in his first season itself. We went only till the last 4 of the Champions league but still we managed to win the league. Hierro and Del Bosque were then sacked and that brought the demise of Real Madrid as a European super power. What Florentino failed to do at that point was get a real good replacement for the hole left by the two. He tried for Ayala and failed so he got players like Walter Samuel and Jonathan Woodgate who failed miserably.  He tried out several managers and all of them were poor. The whole fiasco ended with the eventual resignation of Florentino Perez.

This time around he has brought in similar players. Kaka, probably the only person who can be compared with Zidane, then Ronaldo, definitely as good if not better than the great Luis Figo himself and a huge Ronaldo fan in Karim Benzema. We have the real Raul and a potential Roberto Carlos in Marcelo. Well, Marcelo is not bad. The change this time comes in with the signing of young Albiol and the presence of Pepe and Eze G (who was signed last season). This squad is definitely stronger overall than the one we had back then. And the rebuilding is still not over yet. Florentino has planned two more signings for us which means four more players will be sold.

The two upcoming signings will be the most crucial ones but and might just involve our players as a part of the trade. The two major rumors have been Negredo plus cash for Xabi Alonso and Robben and Van der Vaart/Sneijder plus cash for Franck Ribery. Personally, I oppose both the moves. I like Alvaro Negredo a lot and I can see him getting us the goals we need in the league. Also I don’t think we need Xabi Alonso. Arjen Robben though injury prone is just an amazing player. Rafael van der Vaart is just settling down and Wesley Sneijder is just out of form. So I really hope the two players aren’t Ribery and Alonso though Ribery looks sort of inevitable. Florentino wants him, he wants us, well it just has to happen. There are other rumors about the arrivals of Alvaro Arbeloa, Maicon and Ashley Cole as well. Both are cunts. So I’d be against them even if they do join Real. We’ll just have to wait and see.

With Javier Saviola and Jordi Codina already leaving the club the others who are likely to leave are Royston Drenthe (mostly to Fiorentina on loan), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Tottenham, Besiktas, Lyon are all after him), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Milan have him as their backup target), Christoph Metzelder (to Besiktas) and Gabriel Heinze (they said Liverpool but there is nothing concrete on that). Ruben De la Red being ruled out for yet another season might just see lesser number of midfielders being sold.

If Drenthe, Heinze and Metzelder leave as rumored then we will definitely have to strengthen our defense. Ivan Marcano from Racing was a good option, but Villareal have scooped him. We definitely need a reknown left back because I too see Marcelo as a potential left winger and not as a defender though he was brought into the club as one. Miguel Torres is a special player. His crosses for Raul’s goal against Sevilla and Van der Vaart’s goal against Villareal proves that he has a fairly good left foot. He has played on the left even under Capello two seasons back and it all depends on Manu Pellegrini as to whether he would continue to play the Lahm like right-footed left-back role. Center of defense will be a problem in case Metzelder leaves. We’ll be left with two proper center backs till Pepe comes back. And in case someone carries an injury crisis will strike. Gary is good but immediately into the starting line up would be too much of an ask from the young Uruguayan. St.Iker is there. But for the King’s Cup games and other lame ass games we might need a decent keeper. I’ve heard quite a lot about Antonio Adan. So I hope they bring him up through the ranks. Right back won’t be much of a problem. Jack of all trades Lass and Sergio Ramos are there to take care of the position. My only hope is that Sergio Ramos attacks lesser now that we’ve added that much needed flamboyance in attack. To sum it up we still need reinforcements, more so in defence rather than up front. I just hope the ‘two more signings’ Florentino hinted about is fills the holes in our team rather than overloading the already filled ones.

Now coming to the question that I posed initially as to whether it is fair to expect Real to emulate what Barca achieved  last season this coming season I would say it is a big NO. No because the team has been shaken right from its foundation. It has been given a new lease of life by getting in players galactic by nature. To expect it to perform  tremendously well as though it is an automaton that takes an input has five world class players and gives three trophies as output is simply ridiculous. But expectations will be there. I’ve just listed a few here…

  • First a better Champions League story which means going farther than a first knock-out round exit or being throttled in the last 16.
  • Next a little more care given to the Copa Del Rey in which we have been one of the poorest sides in Spain. Now that there are better players, players from last season can be given Copa Del Rey duty along with some bright youngsters and I’m they’ll fare well.
  • Top two in the league has now become mandatory especially because of the lack of talent present in Spain at the moment except for a maximum of 5 or maybe 6 clubs.
  • The icing on the cake would be a double on Barcelona (in which we clobber them 7-0 in one leg and 8-0 in the other) and a massive win at The Riazor (18 years due).
  • One of strikers shoul get the Pichichi which I deem would be tough only because we have too many of them and the goals we get will split.
  • And finally depending on our defense the Zamora Trophy for St.Iker. Am I expecting too much?

I’m not expecting the team to fulfill all six either. The last three are just something the fans would love to relish whereas the first three are the ones which we really have to look at achieving.

So basically to answer the question asked in the title of this post, I’d say that it is natural to expect such a dream team (on paper at least) to perform but we must understand that though supreme by talent they possess they too are humans and they will definitely take a little to acclimatize to their new home esp when three out of four are players coming in from other leagues. So patience, something that we Madridistas generally lack, is what is required. Florentino has done all that he can to pump in new blood to a team that was suffering severely and left in the dust by the previous office but we cannot expect the recovery to be magical. We will succeed if not now very very soon. Its destiny.

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Blast of the past for Metzelder

With several friendlies already on the books, including one in Canada and another in the United States, Real Madrid wishes to announce another exhibition match against Borussia Dortmund on 19 August to celebrate the German club’s 100-year anniversary.

Raul and Metzelder

On August 19, 2009 the legendary 1998 Champions League semi-final match will be restaged. Borussia Dortmund meets Real Madrid C.F. in a friendly match at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park. BVB’s longstanding marketing partner SPORTFIVE made the footballing highlight possible. The exact kick-off time is still to be announced.

This game is the third European encounter SPORTFIVE has organized and marketed for Real Madrid C.F., officially declared by FIFA to be the best club of the 20th century. SPORTFIVE is organising the two historic clubs’ exclusive meeting with its newly founded event subsidiary, ‘The Sports Promoters’ (TSP).

Philipp Hasenbein, managing director of SPORTFIVE, said:

We are delighted to be able to bring Real Madrid, the world’s best club, to Dortmund and organise and market such a footballing highlight for BVB’s centenary. For TSP, organising this top encounter is a thrilling job.

BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke commented:

A duel with Real Madrid is always an absolute highlight. We are very pleased to be able to offer our fans this encounter, because games against the ‘Royals’ are always great emotional occasions and every player wants to do their best, even if it is a game between friends.

Real Madrid General Director and Presidential Advisor, Jorge Valdano said:

Our fans and the team are already looking forward to this game, because BVB is a great club and the game is sure to take place against an impressive backdrop. We have had very good experiences with friendly matches in Germany and it will be a very interesting and prestigious game for our team.

It’s a home-coming of sorts for Christoph Metzelder, who on 19 August will return to Borussia Dortmund as a Madridista. Also of note, Kaka will come face to face with Egyptian striker Zidan, who he played against earlier this week in the Confederations Cup.

Metzelder spent seven years with Borussia, during which he earned the reputation as an outstanding defender and a spot on the German national team.

Kaka and Zidan, meanwhile, will square off once again after both put in stunning performances in their Confederations Cup duel. Real Madrid are already familiar with the Egyptian, who scored a cracker of a goal against them with Hamburg during last summer’s Emirates Cup in London.

Let the transfers begin…

Now that we have a new president, presidential adviser, director general, sporting director and a new manager its time to start off with rebuikding the squad. We still have about three months left but rebuilding a squad is no three month process. We need to have settled the squad issues by mid July atleast considering the fact that we have a new manager and a set of new players. Time to adapt is essential.

We all know who all we’ve been linked with. Right from Kaka, Ribery, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic to David Villa, David Silva, Juan Mata, Xabi Alonso are supposedly our targets. Hopefully Pellegrini will first keep an eye on our defense before altering any other part of the team. He already has Garay at his disposal. The most likely exits are that of Dudek, Heinze, Saviola, Metzelder, Drenthe (on loan), Van der Vaart ( 😦 ) and some say even Sneijder and Marcelo might be sold. Personally Sneijder has had a poor season but I would never sell him. Lass, Gago and Diarra are fighting for the same position. So one of them should leave if we are planning on getting new midfielders. Thus we will also need one or two left backs. Miguel Torres and Sergio Ramos can play on the right. Both are young and good. A couple of SOLID central defenders. A couple of world class playmakers are needed and thats where the Galacticos policy comes into play, Raul and Ruud are 32 and 33 respectively. Hunter seems to have lost it. Pipita is just too good to be sold. So a world class striker is definitely needed. I am wondering about the roles of Guti and Salgado next season as well. Guti has an attitude problem. Salgado is a useless prick.

With so many problems already we need to decide on our team ASAP. What looks likely is we will have stars again. And along with them we will get more players who are much better than Pavons.

Excellence will return.

Hala Madrid!!

Post-match comments

Juande Ramos recognized that Valencia were the deserving winners on Saturday night. Real Madrid Sporting Director Pedja Mijatovic offered his impression of the defeat against Valencia. Despite losing to Valencia, the players won’t give up and will continue playing to win. Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Ramos and Gabi Heinze insist the team will continue doing whatever it takes to win their three remaining matches this season.

Valencia CF 3-0 Real Madrid CF (8)

Juande Ramos:

The match began on level footing. We had twenty good minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. We wanted to win but Valencia got luckier on goal. They dominated the match after the first goal and were the deserving winners. The score reflects the security with which they played. I think we could have scored in the first half.

We were a solid team up until the last two matches. We didn’t concede goals and we put together a good streak. There is no explanation for the number of goals we have conceded recently.

We will see what Barcelona do tomorrow, but I think winning the league has become very complicated.

Balance is the most important aspect for a team, and that is what I think we are missing. We don’t score more goals by having more forwards. We needed midfielders. We didn’t control the match, which is why I made the changes I made.

We are professionals and we must win all our remaining matches and work hard. That’s all that is left and it’s all we can do.

Pedja Mijatovic:

We knew it would be complicated. Last week’s defeat still hurts and Valencia were very motivated. It wasn’t because of our players’ attitude. They did what they could, but it was hard after losing to Barcelona and finishing second in the table. I always enjoy returning to Valencia because it is where I really became a player. I had three great years here. I am happy to return, but I am leaving sad.

Marcelo:

We need to win our remaining matches because we are still mathematically alive and we need to fight for our fans. We tried to win the match, but sometimes things don’t turn out like we want them to.

Valencia played well. Now we need to forget this match and focus on the rest. We need to win them.

Metzelder:

We knew Mestalla was a tough place to play, but Real Madrid can play on any pitch. We are going through a difficult patch and must do whatever it takes to defend the image of this club. We easily lost two matches and must cheer up to take on the matches we have left.

We worked hard over the last few months to catch Barcelona and after last week’s tough loss it is hard to move forward. It’s hard when we don’t have any chance to win the title.

We need to win our matches. Barcelona have had an amazing year and deserve to be champions. I don’t care if it’s tomorrow or next week. We had a few tough months this year, but we diplayed commitment and dedication. When all is said and done, we can only say we didn’t have a great year.

I want to continue playing here because it’s the best club in the world and players are proud to wear this shirt. It’s up to the club so we will see what happens this summer.

Higuain:

Nobody likes to lose, so we have to save face and finish off the season as best as possible. It quickly became an uphill battle and we couldn’t stage a comeback. We need to move on.

Heinze:

It’s a shame for our fans because we play for a club that is used to winning. We are professionals and will fight for this shirt until the very end.

We knew we had to play Valencia, but each goal hurt did more damage. We thought we could win, but that wasn’t the case. We are finding it hard to keep our chins up, but we need to finish the season in the best way possible.

Sergio Ramos:

It was a tough blow. We must be professionals and keep chugging along. We knew what Valencia would bring to the table They are a great team and very talented.

We must focus on recovering and moving on. We will fight until the end for this shirt.
