Team of the Decade: Defenders
Right then. Now we move on to the back four. The defense, at least in the past decade, hasn’t been one of our strong points. Some say it was because of the departure of Claude Makelele and some others blame the departure of Fernando Hierro but either ways the strength we displayed in attack is not the same as what we displayed in defense. But still a few men stand out – a class apart from the rest. Some played together and others played at different points of time. Anyways moving on…
The nominees under the Right Back category for Real Madrid’s Team of the Decade are:
Míchel Salgado
In 1999 Real Madrid snapped up Salgado for €11,000,000. He appeared in 29 league games in his first season, while also helping the club win the season’s Champions League. He went on to keep the right back spot to himself for the next seven seasons until he was relegated to the bench by Sergio Ramos in the 2006–07 season.
Salgado still contributed with 16 games for the Merengues’ 30th national title, mainly due to injuries to Pepe, with Ramos being relocated to centre back. In the following two seasons, he played very rarely (only 17 matches combined), being sent off in the final game of the 2008-09 season, a 2-1 loss at CA Osasuna, on 31 May 2009, as Madrid slumped to a fifth consecutive league defeat.
Salgado was eventually released by Real in August 2009. In all Salgado had played 306 times for Real scoring 5 times mostly during the Galacticos era.

Manolo Sanchis to Realmadrid.com
Manuel Sanchis Hontiyuelo played 708 official matches for Real Madrid, 523 of which were La Liga games. No Madridista has played as many, but that may soon change. Raul is two matches away from equaling Sanchis’ league mark and five away from the official match record. Realmadrid.com caught up with the man who will pass on the baton.
708 matches and 523 in La Liga. Who would have thought when you first debuted?
A long time has passed since then. It was 1983 and I did it alongside Martin Vazquez during a time that the team was plagued by injury. We debuted thanks to the courage of Alfredo di Stefano, who confided in us. We won the match thanks to my goal.
So many matches… Which do you hold the fondest memories of?
Of all the league matches, I will always remember my first. Fortunately there were many more victories than defeats after that. This club wouldn’t be what it is had it been any different. There were good and bad matches, but my general recollection cannot be any better.
You must hold a special place in your heart for the Champions League.
Of course. I have fond memories of 20 May 1998 when we won the seventh European Cup. It was a milestone in my career and for Real Madrid.
You have held the record for so long. It must be hard to let it go.
I don’t remember when I surpassed Carlos Santillana exactly, but I know the record has stood for about 12 years and it makes me proud to hand it over to Raul.
Like Santilla did with you.
Santillana was a true gentleman with me and he taught me the right way to pass on the baton and recognize achievements.
Your record will always exist. It has lasted over a decade.
I will stick with the honor of having enjoyed it all these years.

Manolo Sanchis
The dates of the tournament are the best to see players of this age. We like to bet on the future and that’s why we organise a tournament for 320 players of 16 different youth systems from around the world. I think we can teach these kids that they must set a great example and defend the values we all have.
Emilio Butragueño
This is my home, the stadium that is named after the player that changed the history of the most prestigious club in the world. I’m here representing Plan, an association that has been defending the rights of children for over 70 years. This is the best youth tournament in the world. Manolo Sanchis has been very brave while working on the project and it makes me very happy to see the extraordinary magnitude it has achieved.
Ignacio Gonzalez
This World Club Championship is a perfect fit for the Government of Madrid’s support for sport because it will motivate our young and boost the activity of the youth systems of other teams. We will once again show just how well this region can organise a sports event.
The teams set to participate are: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Espanyol, Sao Paulo, Corinthians, Boca Juniors, Peñarol Montevideo, Werder Bremen, Dynamo Kyiv, Partizan Belgrade, Goyang NFGC, Mamelodi Sundowns, Beijing Guian and Real SALT Lake.
