Para Siempre Blanco

Interview

Arbeloa to Realmadrid.com

Alvaro Arbeloa talked shop and spoke about the upcoming match against Deportivo.

"We usually have many chances on goal at the Bernabeu and I hope we net many strikes against Deportivo"

What does the team need to finish coming together?

We still have many things to improve on. A team always has to keep improving and there are always many things to work on. We are still on that path.

Real Madrid remain undefeated in Spain and Europe.

That is very important. It is vital for us to continue being a tough, hard team that doesn’t sell victory cheap. We want to get better and victories allow us to remain calm in the process.

Is the team worried about failing to capitalise on the many chances it gets to score?

We are excessively worried about our forwards having a rough patch. The most important thing is to improve in defence and assimilate the coach’s ideas. The team has great forwards and I am sure that, by the end of the season, they will have scored many times.

Do you think the team will score against Deportivo on Sunday?

I hope so. We usually have many chances to score when we play at the Santiago Bernabeu. Hopefully goals will come.

Is it special for you to play against Deportivo given that you played with them in the past?

It’s always nice. I was there for six months and they treated me very well. I still have many good friends on the team and, obviously, it is going to be very nice to play against them again.

Pepe to Realmadrid.com

Pepe is ready to appear at the Bernabeu again after a long absence. Now that he has recovered, the defender is anxious to help the team this season.

Pepe

"I can't wait to play at the Bernabeu again"

You recovered from your injury and rejoined the team last week. Are you ready to face Osasuna?

I feel fine and anxious to step onto the pitch and help the team. I can’t wait to play at the Bernabeu again. It is very important to me.

What would you like to say to the fans, who have always supported you?

I can’t express my gratitude with words. I think the best I can do to correspond them is to do my job on the pitch and help Real Madrid. By helping the Club I help each and every one of them. I can show them I feel fine and that I’m capable of doing my job. I wish to thank them for all their support.

The team will fight for the first three points at stake at the stadium…

We always try to win, but it isn’t possible all the time. It is our duty to do a good job and fight to the end to take three points. That’s what we’ll do.

What will you have to do to defend against Osasuna’s Pandiani and Aranda?

They are strong strikers. They like to fight hard. Osasuna have a good squad and a strong coach. They’ve been doing a good job. We have to try to control the pace to our games from the start.

What would you highlight about Mourinho’s Real Madrid?

Mourinho is different. He stands out in many things. He is a very good coach, like the rest who have been on this team, but this is a new era both for him and for us. This is a good experience for all. Being able to coach Real Madrid is like a reward for his career. We all want the best for the Club and we will prove we can win our games.

The Champions League kicks-off on Wednesday. What can you tell us about your first three opponents, Milan, Ajax and Auxerre?

We are in a complicated group, but we are all equals. We have good enough players to confront these teams. We will do a great job and we will thrill our fans.

Kaka to Realmadrid.com

Despite the fact that Kaka is living out some of the greyer days of his career, the Brazilian midfielder is slowly starting to smile again. He feels little discomfort in his knee and he is as anxious as ever to return to the pitch for Real Madrid.

Kaka

"I work very hard to return the support shown by fans, my team-mates and the club"

How do you feel?

My knee doesn’t hurt any more. It has been a month since I had surgery and everything is going well. I spend many hours doing physiotherapy, which is helping me a lot.

It looks like you are starting to smile again after a month of hard work.

Yes, mainly because my knee is getting better, which makes me happy. I am anxious to get back to work.

Your team-mates’ support has being very important to you.

The squad has been helping a lot. You saw Cristiano Ronaldo come joke around with me, but there are many other players who have dealt with similar injuries and who I talk to frequently. I thank all of them for the support they have shown.

The only thing you have thought about since your operation on 5 August has been working hard to rejoin the squad.

I asked the doctors how long I would need to recover and play again. They said it depends on me and my progress. I am committed to doing everything I can to recover as soon as possible and return to work.

Do you feel everything is going according to plan and that soon you can rejoin the squad? The doctors say sometimes they have to drain the fluid from your knee…

I am following the doctors’ and physiotherapists’ instructions. It is true I sometimes would like to do a bit more because I really want to start working with the team again. I know many things depend on me and I am going to do everything I can to recover.

You must be thinking about playing again at the Bernabeu.

I can’t wait to start playing again. It is very hard to watch games because I really want to join my team on the pitch and help my team-mates in a more direct way. However, I have to be patient because I still have a lot of work to do off the field.

Mourinho to uefa.com

José Mourinho tells UEFA.com why Real Madrid CF's recent UEFA Champions League disappointments make his job harder while stressing the hunger for success in his squad.

Ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Champions League draw in Monaco, José Mourinho sat down with UEFA.com to discuss the challenges he faces at home and in Europe with his new club, Real Madrid CF.

The Portuguese coach, who guided FC Internazionale Milano to the trophy last season to emulate his previous success with FC Porto, has wasted no time in revamping the Madrid squad, signing the likes of Mesut Özil and Ricardo Carvalho even as stalwarts Raúl González and Guti departed. He explained why Madrid’s recent struggles in the UEFA Champions League have made their task all the harder but underlined the hunger in his squad, saying the players “are not in a comfort zone”.

UEFA.com: Would you have liked to have still had Raúl in the squad?

José Mourinho: Yes I would because he’s a symbol of Madrid, a symbol of a great professional, a symbol of a Madrid winner and a historic club figure. However, at the same time, I think he is a player who deserves the freedom the club gave him to decide on the direction he wanted to take in his life. He is an intelligent man who wants to play every game and he understood that with Gonzalo Higuaín and Karim Benzema – two 22-year old forwards – that the space around him had changed; he took a brave decision.

UEFA.com: Could Sergio Canales be the new Guti?

Mourinho: I don’t like to compare. Guti created history in Madrid, providing unforgettable moments for everyone who loves football. It’s true that [Canales] has some of Guti’s attributes on the field, he thinks in the same way. Perhaps Canales is more of a battler, more aggressive but he is a player who has a lot of things Guti has.

UEFA.com: Will the fact that Madrid haven’t got past the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League for the past six seasons weigh heavily on the club?

Mourinho: I’m not thinking about that. The big problem with Madrid is that the club are not among the top seeds, they have lost this status. My tradition as a coach has always been like this as when I arrived at Porto, Chelsea and Inter, they were not top seeds. I have never been fortunate enough to arrive at a club considered top seeds. Because of this, things are more difficult because first you have opponents who are number one seeds in the group, making it difficult to finish top, and if you don’t, it means a stronger opponent in the next round.

UEFA.com: What have been your impressions of the team since your arrival?

Mourinho:The thing that has struck me most is that the players want to win. Despite what many people think, these players are not in a comfort zone just because they are playing for Real Madrid. It’s completely the opposite – the players want to win and to improve. It’s a team I like to work with. It’s not a perfect team, nor is it a team that has just been put together, but it is a pleasure working with the players here.

Özil to Realmadrid.com

Mesut Ozil had his first interview with the Club’s official media following his first training session as a Real Madrid player.

"I am anxious to prove my worth with Real Madrid"

How was your first training with Real Madrid like?

It was great. I met the entire team and the coach. I am very happy to be here. It seems they have a lot of fun. The weather is also nice, which makes training even more pleasant.

Tell us what you did on your first day as a Real Madrid player.

I left from Dusseldorf airport very early and I arrived in Madrid at 11:00. I didn’t have much time to rest, but I’m glad I’ve already attended my first session. This team and the Club are the best. Everything I’ve seen so far is positive and it makes me even happier to have made the decision to come here. I’ve simply had a good experience.

Other European clubs also wanted to sign you. Why did you choose Real Madrid?

I think Real Madrid are the best team in the world and they have some of the world’s best players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and many more. I am delighted to be here with them. I am also proud to have a coach like Jose Mourinho want me on this team. That’s the real reason I’m here. He is one of the best coaches in the world. It is a privilege to be able to work with him. I am anxious to start.

You talked to Mourinho before you came here and you had a chance to speak to him during your first training session. Did you also talk to your new team-mates?

I spoke with Mourinho about what he wants me to do on this team. He wanted me here and that’s why I came. I’ve been in touch with Sami Khedira through SMS, but he is the only player I know here. I met the rest on my first day at work.

What did Khedira tell you?

He told me he wanted me to come here. He also said the Club is fantastic and that the weather is very nice here in Madrid. He mentioned that all the players are very nice and that he was having a great time. Now that I’m here I’ve seen it with my own eyes. I am very happy to be here and I had a great time with my new team-mates during training.

You are already a world class player at just 21 years of age. Tell us what sort of player you are…

It’s hard to answer that. I’d say I’m very fast with the ball. I have good touch on ball and I’d also say I’m strong from a technical point of view. I like teamwork. Everyone who knows how I play and has seen me perform knows I can do much. I am very happy to be able to prove my worth as a Real Madrid player. I want people to be entertained as they watch me play.

Carvalho to Realmadrid.com

New Real Madrid signing, Ricardo Carvalho sat down for his first official interview with Realmadrid.com on Thursday and discussed his career to date and expectations as a Madridista.

"Mourinho and I have won a lot of trophies together and I hope to do the same here"

You now officially play for Real Madrid. What were the first few hours like?

Everything happened so fast and, honestly, I was very excited to come. I cannot wait to start training and getting into a daily routine in order to help me adjust.

You should adapt quite easily being that you know several of your new teammates already.

I hope that is the case. I do know some players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, as well as coach Mourinho. But every one of them has their own life, so we simply need to be tight-knit on the pitch. That said, the fact that I already know them makes me more confident and facilitates my adjustment.

Spanish football is quite similar to your style of Portuguese football.

Portuguese football is similar to Spanish football because we both like to touch and keep possession of the ball. I think that because of my characteristics, adjusting to English football was more difficult than what adjusting to Spanish football will be.

You have played a lot of football in your lifetime. What has you career been like?

Until I began playing for Porto I played on loan for first division clubs. Then I began playing for Porto, which was a dream come true for me. It was hard for me to play with Luis and Jorge Costa there; two players who had been there a long time. I think the moment I will cherish was in 2004 because it was a good year for the club and for the national team, both of whom I was starting for. That was another dream come true. Then I was transferred to Chelsea, where I played for six years until coming here to continue my career.

Because you have already coincided with Mourinho in the past, what is he like and how does he convert every team he coaches into a winner?

Mourinho is very detail oriented and a perfectionist. He doesn’t take player mistakes well, but we do make them because we are human. He is very demanding and he pays attention to every detail in order to win. We have won a lot of trophies together and I hope to do the same here.

There will be many times when you will play with Pepe by your side. You already know him well and he has proven that he is a great center-back. Having him play by your side must make you feel more confident?

I am very happy to be playing with him. He is a very good player who everyone likes and he has managed to make a name for himself here, which isn’t easy to do. We all know how much he means, but I have to do my share playing next to him. We are a pair, but we each have to do our part. He cannot play for me and vice versa.

Albiol to Realmadrid.com

Raul Albiol has only spent a few days in team camp in Los Angeles, but the defender is already familiar with the grueling workouts held by Mourinho. After sitting out of the match against America, Albiol hopes to see some action on Saturday against the LA Galaxy.

Raul Albiol: "Every new player who has joined us has been welcomed with open arms"

How do you think your teammates played against America?

It was a typical preseason match that we used to get into a rhythm. I sawa some good things. The team is training very hard.

What is training under Mourinho like? What has he asked of you?

Workouts are very intense and almost all contain ball work in small spaces. It really helps because during matches it is important to know how to play with little room to work with. We are improving day by day. Personally speaking, he hasn’t asked me to do anything in particular. He welcomed us and we started training right away. It is going to be a tough season and we have to be ready as soon as possible. We all have to stick together and row in the same direction.

What are your thoughts on the squad that has been put together?

It’s great. There was already a great team last year and now it’s even better with the players that have arrived. We welcomed all the new players with open arms knowing that if they were signed by Real Madrid it’s because they are very talented.

Canales debuted against America and scored. What do you think?

Canales is very talented. Hhe is young and is going to learn a lot at Real Madrid. He will be able to capitalize on his talent here.

How has Khedira adjusted so far?

He is doing very well. We joke around with him a lot because he doesn’t speak Spanish, but he is very laid back and a hard worker. Let’s see if he fully adapts soon and what he is made of.

What are the team’s goals this season?

We need to take things slowly; one match at a time until we are a strong team that can fight for every title. That is what this team deserves.

Higuain to Realmadrid.com

Gonzalo Higuain’s preseason is off to a flying start after the Argentine scored Wednesday night’s equalizer against Club America.

Higuain: "Mourinho is a serious coach who is backed by his past success"

Your first preseason match and your first goal.

I am happy to have started off with a goal. That is my job and the reason I am here. We need to continue getting used to Mourinho’s methods and tactics and to hope that the new players adjust quickly. I will continue trying to score goals if and when the coach includes me in the starting eleven.

What is working for Mourinho like?

It is great. We are all very anxious to learn from him. It is going to be a tough year but we believe we can win every title we compete for. We are very motivated.

What is it about him that the players identify with?

He is a serious coach. We are all aware of his past success and we mutually want to help one another win titles with Real Madrid.

What are you goals for the upcoming season?

I hope to score more goals than last seasaon because it will help the team accomplish its objectives. I scored a good number of goals last year and would love to score even more this season.

And what about the team’s objectives?

Our goal is to win all three titles we have in play. It would be a nice reward for our fans, who are hoping and waiting for it to happen.

What would winning the Champions League mean to this club?

It would be very special. This team has won more European Cups than any and we are hoping to win the Tenth this year.

What woud you like to tell Madridistas heading into the new season?

I ask that they support us as always and want to tell them that we will play the very best we can. I hope they have fun watching us and that they help us celebrate should we win any titles.

Benzema to Realmadrid.com

One year after joining Real Madrid, Karim Benzema feels completely integrated within the team. After going through the typical adjustment phase, the French striker feels he will be back to his old form in no time.

Karim Benzema: "I hope to score a lot of goals for this team"

What can we expect from you this season?

I have played for this team for a year now and my Spanish is much better, which makes me feel more integrated. I think this is going to be my year at Real Madrid.

What can you contribute to the team?

Goals. I hope to score a lot of goals for this team this season. I am going to work hard so that people have faith in me. It’s going to be a good year for me.

What are the team’s goals this season?

We have a new coach who is very excited about this project, so that will help a lot. A team like this one always need to aspire to win every title in play and we will fight to do just that.

What is your opinion on Mourinho and how do you two get along?

Mourinho is a great coach. He is very strong and very good for us because he talks to the players and instills confidence. He is a winner and he expects the best from each of us.

What has he asked of you this season?

He has asked that I play the football that I am capable of and that I score a lot of goals, and that is what I will do. He has a lot of confidence in all of us, which is very important to the players.

How do you feel about the new signings this year?

They are great players and good for Madrid. We need to work hard to be prepared for the season. This team needs to reach for the stars.

Guti to Realmadrid.com

Guti sat down with Realmadrid.com and RealmadridTV for an exclusive interview following the press conference in which he announced he was leaving the Club.

"I've spent practically my whole life at Real Madrid, the greatest club in the world"

Are you moved by this? How had you envisioned this moment?

I think I am a bit moved. I feel many emotions at the same time. I’ve spent practically my whole life at Real Madrid, which I regard as the greatest club in the world. I’ve been surrounded by friends, family and journalists that have grown up with me and whom I’ve known practically since day one. I’ve experienced much and I am very happy about having played 14 years on the first team. I’m happy because the Club and I reached an agreement to rescind my contract. I am now waiting for a new stage in my life to begin.

You arrived when you were 9 years old and you’ve won many titles in 24 years. What do you think of all that?

I think my parents and my sisters did a great a job. They deserve half of the credit for the titles I’ve won. I wouldn’t have reached this far without their great efforts. I remember many trains I had to get, many cold evenings I spent at Real Madrid City… I’ve lived many things here and many of them have been very good.

Which is your fondest memory?

Probably making my debut. It’s what every kid wishes for; to play at the Bernabeu before 80,000 fans. I guess that’s the most profound moment I’ve lived. It was also the product of a lot of hard work from my part and my family as well. It was incredibly satisfying.

You are capable of serving an assist before anyone else. What do you feel when the crowd cheers you on for something like that?

You end up getting used to it and realising these things just happen in football. Sometimes you are remembered for great achievements and others you end up paying for mistakes. I feel proud when I hear people will miss me. It means I did a good job at Real Madrid and that’s what people will remember.

Fans were visibly moved when you said farewell at the stadium after the last league match. So were journalists today in the press room…

That’s true. We all do our job and it is impossible for everyone to agree about everything all the time. Some journalists began their careers at the same time I began mine. I also believe the fans have had greater affection for me in the past few years. I’ve felt it on the street. I think things have changed. Some people like you more and others less. Our job puts us in the public eye and everyone has an opinion. I have very fond memories. I’ve felt great affection from people in the last four months when my future at the Club was still uncertain. I am grateful for it. I want fans to know I will continue to be a Real Madrid supporter all my life.

Do you think you may come back some time?

I may. I’d like to because I’ve spent many years here and I know the Club very well. I also believe I could probably do a good job. This is a great club and what always remains is the crest and the Real Madrid name. Many people like me come and go. You never know what the future has in store for you.

Marcos Tebar to Realmadrid.com

After joining the Real Madrid academy at the age of 12 and spending another 12 years playing for its youth teams, Marcos Tebar is ready to push for the final move to the first team. The Castilla midfielder has been a mainstay in first team training this preseason and he hopes that it leads to a permanent role on the squad.

Tebar: "I feel prepared to help the team"

How do you feel participating in the first team’s preseason?

I am very excited just as I was last year. Every preseason is different. Last year we had a different coach, but I am just as excited.

How have the first few days been?

They have been very intense and there has been a lot of hard work. We are doing a lot of ball drills in a very dynamic setting. We work on playing fast and in small areas.

How do you feel on a personal level?

Very good. I have the typical soreness and blisters that you get every preseason, but I feel great and am training well.

What is your take on the new coach, Jose Mourinho?

He is great. We are all happy with him. We are working at an intense pace and the coach pays close attention to what we do. He doesn’t lose sight of one small detail. Everyone is pleased with him and excited about the preseason.

He has also taken notice of the academy.

That is correct. He is treating us as if we were first teamers, which boosts our confidence when it comes time to training. He makes us feel excited to be here and to help the team.

What has Mourinho told you during these first few days?

We haven’t spoken one-on-one, but he has expressed his confidence in us. He has told us to remain calm and to play the way we know how to.

Di Maria to Realmadrid.com

In what was his first interview as a Madridista, Angel di Maria sat down with Real Madrid’s media outlets to discuss his life, career and future aspirations.

"I am here to win titles"

When did you begin playing football?

I started when I was four years old. A doctor told my mother than I need to channel my energy into sport. That is essentially when my career began.

What position did you play?

I always played up front and it worked out very well.

Are you still in touch with your childhood friends?

I still have the same seven friends that I’ve had since I was a child. They have been there for me in good times and bad.

How did you go from being like any other boy playing football with his friends to playing for a professional club?

I used to play for the team in my neighborhood and then I moved to Rosario Central which is where my career kicked off. When I was 17, the first team coach gave me the chance to play and I subsequently made my debut.

How did you go from playing for your local team to playing for a big club like Rosario? Did a scout spot you?

I always played just because I enjoyed myself. My father then gave me a push in the right direction and told me that I should see if I could play for Rosario Central.

As a child what did you want to be as an adult? Have you always wanted to be a footballer?

I wanted to be many different things, but when my father encouraged me to make a career out of football, I went for it. Thankfully, everything has worked out very well for me.

Pedro León to Realmadrid.com

Pedro Leon shared his excitement for signing for Real Madrid in his first interview to Realmadrid.com.

"I will wear this shirt with honour and humility"

Congratulations for seeing your lifelong dream come true.

Thank you. This is the best club in the world. I’ve dreamt about playing here since I was a child. I am very happy.

You look rather moved. Did you also expect such a warm welcome from the fans?

They were great. I really didn’t expect this. Many people came today and I am very grateful for that.

Florentino Perez thanked you during the presentation for making a great effort to be here.

I had many other offers, but I told my agent Real Madrid was the only place for me as soon as I learned about their interest. This was my dream.

You’ve often stressed this is the best club in the world and that it has the best players and the best coach.

Yes. You can’t get a better chance than the one I’ve been given. I know I must be humble and work extremely hard. This is the best club and it has the best players and the best coach too, so being here is truly amazing. This is the best environment in which to make progress and learn more.

You are only 23 years old, but you’ve already placed for Murcia, Levante, Valladolid and Getafe. Is it your main objective to continue to grow as a player?

Yes. I’ve reached the top by signing for the best club. I’m not the only one who says Real Madrid is the best. I must now work very hard and continue to improve while I defend this shirt with character, competitivity, pride and, above all else, humility.

All your previous coaches have praised your qualities.

I am very grateful to them. I won’t forget any of them, but I am especially fond of Mendilibar.

Karanka to Realmadrid.com

Aitor Karanka discusses his first days on the job, his relationship with Mourinho, his goals and the new project he is about to set out on in an in-depth interview with Realmadrid.com.

"Mourinho is the perfect coach for Real Madrid"

What was it like to receive that phone call from Real Madrid?

It was a huge surprise because when I got a call from Fernando Hierro on Friday I thought it was just a joke, but then he told me that it was true. We spoke about it and he told me that he had spoken to Jorge Valdano, who said he wanted me to be an assistant to Mourinho. I spoke to Jorge Valdano later that afternoon and everything came together the following day.

How did you react?

It’s funny because it’s a similar experience to that of a player. Everything takes place so fast. You don’t have to think too much when it’s Real Madrid. It happened to me as a player and now as a coach of course I had to seize the opportunity.

It’s a huge step in your career and it only compares to the pressure of joining a club like Real Madrid.

There is no comparison. This is a huge step in my career. Coaching Spanish national youth teams reminded me of the days when I was young and so passionate, and now I’m going from coaching 16 and 17 year olds to the best players in the world. It’s an important change, but the five years I already spent here will help me a lot.

Why do you think Mourinho thought of you to join his coaching staff?

The club gives the coach the names of several former players who they believe represent the values of Real Madrid. Mourinho knew me as a player and he spoke to other Madridistas with whom he has relationships for references. He then told me that he wanted it to be me.

What was your first impression of him?

I am shocked by everything he has already done. He is much different than the image that many might have of him. He is very calm and caring and he told me that he is thrilled that I am there and that he will help with me everything possible. We have spoken every single day; he asks my advice and I ask him questions. He puts me right in the thick of things and makes me feel important.

Mourinho has always had someone who knows the club from a personal standpoint. It must be a sign that he wants to be very involved…

Of course. I know this club very well. Several current players were teammates or opponents of mine. I got to know many of them during my time as coach of the Spanish national youth teams. It is very important to have someone on board who knows the club and its players and who has a close relationship with the coach.

Arbeloa to Marca

Alvaro Arbeloa made it clear that Spain is ready to get the World Cup ball rolling in an interview with Marca.

"The World Cup is the greatest there is."

World Cup:

The World Cup is the greatest event there is in the football world. It is amazing to be part of an event that manages to paralyze the world.  It is a privilege to play for one of Spain’s best teams ever, if not the best. It makes me very proud.

Team’s mentality:

The team is very anxious to get the competition under way. We have worked very hard. We know we didn’t play as well as we could have in the first few tune-up matches, but we are just getting going.

Strengths:

This team’s best weapon is the ball. We will be better off than our opponents as the minutes tick off the clock because we will make them run a lot and wear down. Chasing the ball so much is physically and mentally draining.

Van der Vaart to Marca

Rafael van der Vaart shared his views on the signing of Jose Mourinho with Marca.

"Mourinho is a special coach who brings the best out of every player"

Mourinho:

I am very excited about Mourinho’s signing. All of us players at Real Madrid have been given a great opportunity. Mourinho is a special coach who brings the best out of every player. He understands his men and he always wins. The project that’s about to begin is very good.

I’ve followed the signing through the media and I’ve talked to team-mates of mine. Everyone is talking about Mourinho, which is only natural since he’s won it all and he now happens to coach Real Madrid. I think it’s normal for all of us to be excited about it, not just the fans. It is important for us players to be under his command.

Last Season:

Last season wasn’t easy. Many new players arrived on the team, which makes it hard to win and play well in the first year. We didn’t reach our goals and the Club brought in the best coach in the world. I believe it is the right decision because Real Madrid has to win titles again, starting now.

Real Madrid:

We have the best players and the best coach in the world, so we must win something, right? I believe the groundwork for a great long-term project is being laid. It aspires to make Real Madrid top team for a long time. That’s were team sould always be.

Mourinho on Onda Cero

Jose Mourinho discussed Real Madrid’s potential for growth during interviews with Spanish radio’s RNE and Onda Cero.

"Real Madrid must walk onto the pitch to win"

Goal:

The goal is to work as hard as we can, to be happy and to make those who work for my club happy. I am very excited. Real Madrid is the perfect club for me because it is big, very ambitious and has tremendous potential.

Possibility:

I am very confident in my abilities and have high self-esteem. I believe everything will turn out for the best and that  I will be very successful. I always think positively.

Real Madrid:

I am here because of this club’s outstanding history. Fans who go to the Bernabeu always expect the best. During the preseason they are already thinking about the titles the team will win. Real Madrid’s method of thinking is not that different than mine.

I have joined Real Madrid with ten years of top level experience. I have worked in three different countries and won 17 titles. I am emotionally stable, have a stable status and have joined a great club that is Real Madrid will all the peace of mind in the world.

Strategy:

I will first put all the pressure on myself to work as hard as I can, to stay motivated and to feel the pressure. I need to have the kind of pressure. If I can be in an environment where I have this kind of pressure, even better. We need to be united as a team and win and lose as one.

Cibeles:

It’s only normal that Real Madrid fans think about a trip to Cibeles. We are thinking the same thing. Madrid may win or lose, but they must always walk onto the pitch to win. That must never change.

Mourinho on ‘El Larguero’

Jose Mourinho sat down with Cadena SER’s “El Larguero” on Monday evening to discuss his new team and intentions.

"The dimension of a club like Real Madrid has no comparison"

Press Conference:

The press conference was quite relaxed. There were a lot of people, but that should be expected at a club of the magnitude of Real Madrid. I have worked for big clubs, but Real Madrid is in a world of its own socially speaking and in terms of the attention it receives.

Why Real Madrid:

My will to win and be the best at all times encouraged me to come here. The pressure I feel today is the same as what I have always felt. It is what I expect as long as I coach football. Once you accept that you are no longer the best you should be ready to leave the game. That is why I believe one should always pressure oneself to be the best, to be a winner until the very end.

Philosophy:

I like my teams to be like a family. Each player should have his own at home and we will share the one brought together by football. We must all be honest. Whoever works the hardest will play. Whoever doesn’t won’t. It can be either very hard or very easy to work with me. If a player is willing to work hard and well and understands that the club is much more important than himself, it will be easy. On the contrary however, if he is selfish, self-centered and isn’t passionate about his job, it will be hard.

Signings:

Real has a right-back that I like very much in Sergio Ramos. But in my way of thinking, I believe he can be better as a central defender so we might need a right-back. I also would like to have an alternative left-back to Marcelo. Marcelo has his characteristics but Real needs a balanced squad, different players for each position. I would like a left-back that has different characteristics to Marcelo.

The midfield line is very important. It’s difficult to find a complete player in central midfield. You have less players box to box. You have more number 10s and defensive midfielders. But it’s very difficult to find a player in midfield right now that is complete. It’s difficult to choose who the best is because they play in different football cultures.

You can’t say that (Chelsea’s Frank) Lampard will score 30 goals in Serie A or in the Primera Division but in England he averages 28 goals per season, which is incredible. You cannot say either that (Barcelona pair) Xavi or Andres Iniesta will perform with the same quality if they were to go to the Premier League or Serie A.

Mourinho to Realmadrid.com

Jose Mourinho offered his first official interview to RealmadridTV and Realmadrid.com on Monday, during which he admitted that coaching Real Madrid is a huge motivational factor based on it’s history, tradition and the current project in place.

"This is a challenge I could not let escape"

What are your first thoughts as the new head coach of Real Madrid?

I am quite relaxed and motivated, which is all one can be when proud to join Real Madrid. This is as good as it gets for a football professional. I need some vacation time, but I would love to be able to start training my new players tomorrow if I could.

You once said that a coach will always feel an absence if they never make it to coach Real Madrid. Is that what drove you to reach this point?

I knew that sooner or later I would coach Real Madrid. I was successful coaching past teams. Real Madrid’s history, tradition and this project are tremendous motivational factors after winning the Champions League with Inter Milan. When one cycle ends another begins, and Real Madrid is a challenge that no coach can let escape.

You have been successful in Portugal, England and Italy. You have won practically everything. Is coaching in La Liga another incentive?

I am familiar with Spain because I worked here for four years but under different circumstances. The possibility of winning La Liga is tremendous incentive for me because no coach has won the Champions League or the league in three different countries. I am a club and group man. I have empathy for the employees, the players and the fans. I want to be the same Mourinho that has worked for other teams. The magnitude of this club doesn’t frighten me. It won’t be an easy challenge, but I am anxious to take it on. I am very excited to begin working here.

Pepe’s return will also be important.

If the doctors of Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team say he is fit, then he must be. It’s great that he can play for Portugal because he will come back with the confidence of having played important World Cup matches. It’s important that our injured players begin preseason training with the desire to work hard. It is incredible that in the middle of the preseason in August some of our players will have to leave to play a match with the national team. It happened to me a lot at Chelsea and Inter Milan. I would only have four or five players to coach, but if you have the best players out there then…

Which of Casillas’ skills stand out for you?

It’s easy to defend well when you have many defensive players. It’s difficult to do when you have many attackers. With many defenders you are bound to defend well, but you don’t attack. If you play with many attackers and you are well organized as a team you can make a difference. My teams all have team players. They do a good job in defense, but they also play the game, score goals and win matches and titles. They are balanced and ambitious teams. Casillas is a fantastic goalkeeper. My goalkeeper coach is also great. He made Victor Baia the best goalkeeper in Europe. He did the same for Cech. I hope he’s done the same for Julio Cesar this season and that he does so for Casillas next year. I don’t know Casillas personally, but I like him very much.

What’s more important for you to work on first, physicality or psychology?

It’s a global process in which the psychological aspect of training is important. It isn’t easy for a coach to work when his players arrive little by little throughout the preseason. My goal is to reach the first match of the championship in decent form.

Florentino Perez on ‘El Larguero’

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez was a guest on Cadena SER‘s programme El Larguero, where he talked about current affairs at the Club.

Mourinho’s arrival:

I still don’t know when Mourinho will come, but he will coach Real Madrid. We don’t have an exact date for his arrival, but that doesn’t worry us. We are calm and in no hurry.

Pellegrini:

I wish to thank Manuel Pellegrini for what he did this season. I wish him luck. He did a great job, but I think we need to take another step in order to put Real Madrid back in its rightful place in Europe and the rest of the world. Mourinho is a No.1 coach and he will give us the chance to a chieve this. These are hard decisions to make and they are the result of this club’s high demands.

Job as president:

Football needs organising and it is always surrounded by passion and feelings. I am experienced and try to avoid all that. My job is to manage the Club and the other professionals at Real Madrid have their own jobs to do. There are things I shouldn’t get involved in because other people better prepared than myself are there to take care of them.

Academy:

I believe a look at Real Madrid City shows just how important we believe our academy is. Mourinho trained there with Inter Milan before the Champions league final and he said he had never seen anything like it.

Sergio Canales eager to prove himself

Sergio Canales, Real Madrid’s first signing for the 2010-11 campaign spoke to Marca about his hopes and expectations in the coming season.

I've dreamt of playing for this club

Expectations:

I want to enjoy myself and learn as much as I can. Competition is always good and it will help me learn. This team has a quality squad. Competition doesn’t scare me. This is a top level squad and I will fight to win titles with Real Madrid.

Signing for Real Madrid:

It was beautiful to sign for Real Madrid because it means I will play with footballers that make a difference and who people like to watch. I feel better when the ball is at my feet and I believe I’m a spontaneous player.

I am proud to be at the Santiago Bernabeu. I have always been impressed by this stadium. I can’t wait to step onto the pitch and do my best. Real Madrid have many top quality players. I am anxious to take part in the team’s preseason.

Guti and Raul:

Few players achieve what Guti and Raul have. They’ve meant everything for this club and the fans. I still have a long way to go. There is still a lot they can do. I admire them. I dream about being like them some day.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Punto Pelota

Cristiano Ronaldo discussed his first season as a Madridista on Tuesday evening’s program Punto Pelota.

"We have to believe we can still win"

Getting signed by Real Madrid was my dream. This club is what I am all about. I identify with it, its history, its philosophy and its past players. Real Madrid is my club and my home. I want this to be the last time I ever play for. I love this city. When I left for Lisbon when I was only 11 I would cry every day, but the sacrifice paid off to be where I am today.

I like having responsibility. I have a strong personality. I sometimes make mistakes, but I learn from them. I accept defeats becase I also know they help in the growing process. I am a normal person.

This is a great team. We have a lot of fun and there is a great atmosphere. Guti is an exceptional player and working by his side is an honor. Higuain is a great partner in attack. Kaka is a good friend and I am sure he will succeed here. Benzema hasn’t had such an easy time adjusting, but he will take off soon. Raul is a role model and a great professional. I love working by his side every day, which is why I hope he stays many more years.

I work out every day in the gym, where I lift weights, stretch, prevent sports hernias and other injuries, sit-ups… But not 3000! I wouldn’t have any lower back muscle. Once I am home I rest, which is just as important. Once vacation comes I will have time to have fun.

My hat-trick performance against Mallorca wasn’t my best. I have had some good matches and would have trouble picking the best. Scoring three goals isn’t always enough, although scoring makes me feel good. Real Madrid always respects its opponent, but we have conceded the first goal on too many occasions this year. This club should not suffer. Fortunately we have been able to mount comebacks.

Winning is the most important, but if it can be complemented by good football then even better. I am pleased with my season, but the team is all that counts. You cannot accomplish anything on an individual level without a team. We need to continue battling because I have faith in this squad.

Enzo Francescoli to Realmadrid.com

Former Uruguayan player, Enzo Francescoli visited Real Madrid City on Tuesday to interview Gonzalo Higuian, but Realmadrid.com jumped on the opportunity to interview the ex-River Plate star.

"Real Madrid will win the league"

How did the team look to you on Sunday against Valencia?

They played well. It was important that they won because Barcelona had drawn the day before. The team didn’t only perform well, but it also showed that it is mentally prepared, which is crucial with only five matches left. The players proved that Real Madrid is ready to fight for the title.

You place special emphasis on the psychological aspect.

Pellegrini deserves a lot of credit because he has done a great job in that sense. Barcelona have to feel the pressure because they must have felt like they had won the league after winning the Clasico. Two matches later everything is the same as it was.

What argument can Real Madrid make for winning the title?

In attack they have the talent of players like Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo. When Gago and Xabi Alonso play together the midfield is very balanced. Finally, this is Real Madrid. We are all familiar with the values of this team. They showed control and speed against Valencia. They practically didn’t let the opponent play, and that is praiseworthy.

So you think Real Madrid will win the league?

Even though it is difficult, yes. The lead is as small as it gets, and Barcelona have the challenge of dealing with fatigue. The Champions League can distract them and they have two complicated road matches against Villarreal and Sevilla. All of this can favor Real Madrid, who only have to think about the five games they have left. Either way, both teams should feel proud of their accomplishments.

How would you assess the job Pellegrini has done?

It isn’t easy to adjust a team with so many new players, but Pellegrini has done a good job. The team is very confident and has improved a lot. This Real Madrid has shown great striking ability and ball possession.

Which Madridista is most like you were?

I don’t like making comparisons. Perhaps the football in the later stages of my career is similar to Higuain’s. I always tried to finish off the play just like he does.

Albiol to RealMadrid TV

Raul Albiol discussed how he and the team are gearing up for Saturday’s showdown against Barcelona in an extensive interview with Real Madrid Television.

"Our fans can give us the edge, but we need to give them a reason to cheer us on"

How do you feel with only one day until the Clasico kicks off?

I can’t wait. Every players wants the match to start. The hours leading up to the match go by so slowly.

This will be your first Clasico at the Bernabeu. Where did you used to watch it?

I would watch it with my family. It’s a match that always brings the country to a stop, and this year even more so because the teams are level on points and there is so much at stake. Neither team wants to lose. We want to play well and win.

Do you think the Bernabeu will be the 12th man?

Yes. Their support is essential. We need to give them something to cheer about. We need to play with intensity so that they see that we are focused. Our fans can give us the edge, but we need to give them a reason to cheer us on.

What are your thoughts on the match? Is winning key to winning La Liga?

All we are thinking about is the 90 minutes, the three points and putting some distance between us and Barcelona. The Clasico isn’t definitive because there are six more matches after it.

Are you favorites because you play at home?

The favorite shows it on the pitch. Everyone said we would concede a lot of goals in the first leg, but it was a very level match. It will be similar this time. We play at home and know we need to win the three points no matter who our opponent is. Barcelona, however, are a strong rival. We need to prove that we can win.

How do you slow Messi down?

Stopping him when one-on-one is very hard. You need to have a very distinctive method of slowing him down. Every player needs to help close open spaces. He is deadly when he has room to work with because he is so fast with the ball at his feet. It doesn’t matter if he receives the ball 30 meters away from the goal; he still has the energy to shoot perfectly.
